About Sciatica Pain: Sciatica is a condition which originates in the lower back. It is a common condition which is typically due to herniated discs in the lower back which cause compression or irritation to the lower lumbar nerve roots exiting the spine. Many times there is no back pain associated with sciatica. It often presents as a burning, numbness or tingling sensation that travels down from the lower back into the buttock and posterior thigh. Sciatica is usually one sided and symptoms are usually worsened by sitting (you are compressing the nerve itself) as well as difficulty standing up.

Does chiropractic care help with this condition?
Yes. Chiropractors are experts when it comes to the spine and conditions originating in the spine, such as sciatica. Chiropractic care helps take pressure off of the irritated nerve roots which are being affected using manual traction/ distraction techniques, gently re-aligning the bones in the lower back so they can go back into their normal spinal positions, as well as passive therapies such as ice or heat, electric muscle stimulation or ultrasound. Dr. Hoffman will develop a custom treatment plan which will be tailored to correct your specific condition.

What can be done to avoid this condition?
It is always wise to consult with a chiropractor to check for dysfunction in your spine as many conditions can usually be avoided. Having regular chiropractic check ups can go a long way in keeping you in good overall health and keeping problems from getting worse over time. It is also helpful to develop and practice good habits such as not sitting or standing for long periods of time. Try to avoid repetitive bending, lifting or twisting motions. Repetitive bending, lifting, and twisting as well as trauma from work accidents and car accidents are typical causes for herniated discs in the lower back which often cause sciatica. In my office I always stress the importance of posture, proper spinal alignment and flexibility. My goal is to educate each of my patients so they can lead and maintain healthy active pain-free lifestyles.
